Kruger National Park Weather in June
by Eugene Booysen
Kruger National Park weather in June falls within what is often considered the “peak” dry season in the Kruger National Park. Most of Southern Africa receives little to no rainfall during this time, and rivers begin to shrink while vegetation dries out. Mornings are pleasantly cool, while afternoons are warm, but not scorching like in October.
Overall, this is an excellent month for game viewing and game drives. You can spend longer hours searching for wildlife without weather interruptions, and sightings are generally very good as animals concentrate around remaining water sources.
Kruger National Park Weather in June overview
Kruger National Park weather in June is very pleasant. In my experience, the only drawback is the cooler mornings and evenings, especially if you enjoy warmer temperatures. Aside from that, June is an excellent month for safari in the Kruger National Park, especially for those interested in the Big Five.
Daytime temperatures typically reach around 23°C–26°C (73°F–79°F), which is very comfortable, particularly for visitors arriving from colder northern regions where this may feel like the peak of summer. Birds and general wildlife are often more active in these moderate conditions. While predators remain largely nocturnal and may still be resting during the day, plains game are commonly active. Rainfall during this time of year is minimal, usually around 0–5 mm, although I have personally experienced a brief rain shower in June in the Kruger National Park.
Night-time temperatures with Kruger National Park weather in June can drop to around 6°C–10°C (43°F–50°F), especially in the early mornings. You can read more about what to pack in the sections below. There are also fewer mosquitoes and insects in general compared to November, when the rainy season begins.
Kruger National Park Weather in June — What to Wear
Knowing what to wear for Kruger National Park weather in June is key to enjoying a comfortable safari. You can also read our full guide on what to wear on a safari. Comfort is important for any safari-goer. You have already endured a long journey to get here, so you might as well make sure you stay warm and relaxed on your game drives.
It is important to pack a fleece or insulated jacket, especially for the early mornings. A scarf, gloves, and a beanie are also recommended, depending on how well you handle colder temperatures. Long-sleeved shirts and pants are useful for both warmth and sun protection, while short sleeves work well for the warmer midday hours.
Although it is cooler in June, the sun can still be strong, so sunglasses and sunscreen are essential. The air is also drier at this time of year, making lip balm and moisturizer helpful additions. It is always a good idea to bring insect repellent, even though insects are far less common in June in the Kruger National Park.
Wildlife and Landscape
Wildlife viewing in June is generally very good. Visibility has already improved as most grasses have died back and many trees have lost their leaves. Animals become more water-dependent during this dry period, naturally moving towards available water sources, and predators follow. With less dense vegetation, wildlife is easier to spot, and your photos often look more dramatic with the dry, golden landscape.
Predators at this time often rest out in the open because they do not need as much shade, although they may still move into shaded areas during the peak heat of the day. This increases your chances of seeing them walking rather than simply lying down. Herds of buffalo also begin forming, and you may encounter very large groups of African buffalo, which are always an impressive sight.
Birding during June is still rewarding. While there are fewer migratory species, the thinner vegetation makes resident birds easier to locate. This makes a birding safari enjoyable and productive. Raptors are also frequently seen as they spend more time searching for prey in the open habitats.
Photography in June is excellent. Golden hour is particularly strong at this time of year, as there is often little cloud cover to soften the light. This creates beautiful warm tones and ideal conditions for photography, especially during the early morning and late afternoon in the Kruger National Park.
