A lifetime connected to Kruger

I grew up close to Kruger National Park, and throughout my life I kept coming back to the bush. Over the years, that grew into a deep love for living things and for the natural world in general. Kruger isn't simply a place I work — it has become a part of me.

My time working at lodges and in other parts of Africa also shaped the way I think about guiding and hospitality. I learned that giving people time and allowing them to experience things in their own way can be just as important as finding the animals themselves.

That is what eventually led me to start Eugene Safaris. I wanted to share Kruger in my own way: slower, more personal, and focused on the experience as a whole.

As your guide, I want you to feel that you have time to look, listen and enjoy the bush without feeling rushed. If we don't find a lion or a leopard, that's okay. There is always something else connecting the dots — the birds, the tracks, the changing light, the sounds around us, and the small moments that make a day in Kruger special.

I get to come out into the bush every day, and I want to share that excitement with you.

A day in the Kruger

Our day starts early, with a coffee and a rusk as we sit quietly and listen to the bush waking up around us.

If lions were roaring during the night, we might follow the direction of those calls and see where the morning takes us. We leave camp early and take our time, driving through Kruger without trying to force the day into a checklist.

The mornings are some of the most important hours in the bush. The light is beautiful, the animals are active and, by staying inside the park, we can make the most of those early hours before the outside crowds arrive.

As the day warms up, we look for animals, read tracks and pay attention to the smaller details that are easy to miss when you're rushing from one sighting to the next.

Around 11 o'clock, we'll find a quiet place to stop for a picnic and take a break before continuing our day.

There is no need to know exactly what we will find. That's part of the excitement. We listen, we look, we track, and we see what Kruger brings us.

Why staying inside Kruger matters

For me, staying inside Kruger is about more than simply having a place to sleep.

It gives us more time in the park and, most importantly, access to the bush before the outside crowds arrive. We can wake up early, have our coffee and rusk, listen to what happened during the night and be ready to go as soon as the gates open.

Those first hours of the morning are incredibly valuable. Animals are often active, the temperatures are cooler and the bush is coming alive. Instead of spending part of the morning travelling to the park, we are already there.

It also means we don't have to rush. We have the time to follow tracks, investigate a call in the distance, stop for something interesting, or simply sit quietly and see what happens.

That extra time changes the experience.

It allows us to experience Kruger at its own pace rather than trying to fit the park into a few hours between opening and closing.

Two ways to experience Kruger

However you choose to experience Kruger, the idea stays the same: a private, personal safari with your own guide and the time to enjoy the bush without feeling rushed.

Stay inside Kruger

Our all-inclusive private safaris are designed for guests who want to immerse themselves in the park. We stay inside Kruger, giving us more time in the bush and the opportunity to make the most of the early mornings and late afternoons.

With your accommodation, meals, game drives and guiding included, you can simply settle into the rhythm of Kruger and enjoy the experience.

Visit Kruger from outside

If you are already staying at a lodge, hotel or other accommodation outside the park, you can still experience Kruger with me on a private day safari.

I'll collect you from your accommodation, and we'll spend the day exploring the park together before returning in the afternoon.

You still get the same personal guiding and slower approach — you simply have your own accommodation outside the park.

The Big Five are part of the story, not the whole story

Of course, we want to see lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo. Finding them is exciting, and I understand why they are such an important part of coming to Kruger.

But I don't believe a safari should be measured by a checklist.

I don't want to spend the day on my phone looking for reports of where somebody else has seen a leopard, then race across the park to try and find it. That's not how I want to experience Kruger, and it's not how I want my guests to experience it either.

A good guide should be able to use his wits, read the signs and make the most of the conditions around him. Sometimes that means following tracks. Sometimes it's listening to alarm calls or birds. Sometimes it's knowing when to stay somewhere a little longer and simply see what happens.

And when we do find the Big Five, we'll enjoy it. But if we don't find all of them, that's okay too.

Because a safari is about everything that connects the dots — the animals, the birds, the tracks, the sounds, the landscape, the light and those unexpected moments that you couldn't have planned for.

The Big Five are part of the experience. They are not the experience itself.

Your guide, Eugene

I'm Eugene, and I'll be the person behind the wheel and beside you throughout your safari.

I grew up close to Kruger National Park, and the bush has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Over the years, that developed into a deep curiosity about wildlife and a love for the smaller details that can easily be missed when you're simply looking for the next big sighting.

I've also spent time working at lodges and in other parts of Africa, where I developed my own approach to guiding and hospitality. I believe guests should have the freedom to enjoy the bush in their own way, without feeling like they are being rushed from one sighting to the next.

My role is to guide you, read the bush, make the decisions when we need to, and hopefully share some of the excitement I still feel every time I head out into Kruger.

I'm not here to promise you a checklist.

I'm here to share a place that has become a part of me, and hopefully leave you with a feeling that you've connected with Kruger too.
