Flying to Kruger National Park is easier than many people expect. There are three main airports used by visitors: Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA), Eastgate Airport near Hoedspruit and Skukuza Airport inside the park itself. In this Kruger National Park airports guide, we'll explain which airport is closest to Kruger National Park, the pros and cons of each option and which airport we recommend depending on your safari plans.

What Airport is Closest to Kruger National Park?
The closest airport to Kruger National Park is Skukuza Airport, which is located inside the park itself. Visitors can step off the plane and be on safari within minutes. However, while Skukuza Airport offers unmatched convenience, it is often more expensive and has fewer flights than the other Kruger National Park airports.
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) is the most popular airport for visitors flying to Kruger National Park. Located approximately 45 minutes from Numbi Gate and around an hour from Malelane Gate, KMIA offers regular flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, making it an excellent choice for first-time visitors.
Eastgate Airport, situated near Hoedspruit, is another excellent option, particularly for those planning to explore central and northern Kruger National Park. It is well positioned for visitors heading towards Satara, Olifants, Letaba and the private reserves surrounding Hoedspruit.

Skukuza Airport is the closest airport to Kruger National Park because it is located inside the park itself. Situated near Skukuza Rest Camp in southern Kruger, it offers visitors the unique experience of landing in one of Africa's most famous national parks. If convenience is your priority, there is no better option for flying to Kruger National Park.

One of the biggest advantages of Skukuza Airport is that your safari begins almost immediately after arrival. Within a few minutes of collecting your luggage, you could be driving through the bush in search of lions, elephants and leopards. If budget isn't a concern, Skukuza Airport is my favourite airport for visitors heading to southern Kruger. There's something special about stepping off the plane and knowing you're already in the park. That said, KMIA usually offers better value and more flight options, which is why many of our guests still choose to fly there.
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA)
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) is the most popular airport for visitors flying to Kruger National Park. Located just outside Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), KMIA offers regular flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town and provides easy access to southern Kruger National Park. For many first-time visitors, it strikes the perfect balance between convenience, flight availability and affordability.

If you're visiting Kruger National Park for the first time, KMIA is usually my recommendation. There are more flights available, prices are often lower than Skukuza and the transfer into the park is straightforward. Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit)
Eastgate Airport is located just outside Hoedspruit and is an excellent option for visitors exploring central and northern Kruger National Park. With regular flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, Eastgate provides convenient access to popular areas such as Orpen, Satara, Olifants and Letaba. It is also a popular gateway for the many private game reserves surrounding Hoedspruit.

Eastgate Airport is a fantastic choice if you're planning to spend most of your time in central or northern Kruger National Park. If your itinerary includes areas like Satara, Olifants or Letaba, flying into Hoedspruit can save several hours of driving compared to arriving via KMIA. It's a route I often recommend for guests wanting to explore a different side of Kruger, and it's also a convenient starting point for many of our all-inclusive Kruger safari packages.
